Peg Miller
Stark County Amateur
Golf Hall of Famer

How many organizations can boast of having three hall of famers as members?  SCWAGA’s founder, Peg Miller, was inducted into the second class of the Stark County Amateur Golf Hall of Fame at Skyland Pines on Wednesday, September 14, with Peg’s family and friends in attendance.  She joins SCWAGA’s secretary Betty Peppard and member Pauline Whitacre, who were inducted into the inaugural class of SCAGHOF in September of last year.

Members of the class also include Joe “Junior” DiPietro, Ken Hyland,  James (Jim) McFarren, Dick Tillett, Bob Vogley, and Eva Shorb Weiskopf.

It was at the age of 50 that Peg decided to try golf, playing in a nine-hole league at Edgewood Golf Course in 1977.  Just playing golf wasn’t enough.  She had an idea which she successfully pursued--to create an organization that promoted and supported golf for Stark County women and girls.  In 1989, Peg initiated the Women’s Team Golf Tournament.  In June of 1992, Peg founded the Stark County Women’s Amateur Golf Association.  Peg served as its president until 2003, giving up the title but not her playing status, winning the Tammy women’s championship six times, including four straight years in the 1990s.

While wintering in Florida, Peg also won two club championships in 1993 and 1996 at Vero Beach’s Sandridge Golf Course, in addition to serving two terms as president of the Sandridge Women’s Golf League.

This is the second local hall of fame honor for Peg, an avid tennis player prior to taking up the game of golf.  In 1996, she was inducted into the Greater Stark County Tennis Association Hall of Fame.  She once managed the Park Centre indoor tennis club (1974-81), was the recreation director for the Canton YWCA (1966-73), and was co-owner and manager of Gymnastics of Ohio (1973-78).

Peg started her professional career as a writer/photographer at The Canton Repository (1944-55) and had authored, illustrated and published a children’s book entitled A Dog’s Story.  She is also an accomplished water-color painter.

Although Peg’s accomplishments and talents are many, her pride and joy is her family--her two sons, William and Doyle, their wives, Jenny and Dana.  Peg has four granddaughters--Ariel, Chelsea, Lindsay, and Karly.

Our congratulations to Peg and all the newly elected members of the Stark County Amateur Golf Hall of Fame!
